Marie Sibylla Merian (sub. Naturalists)
Ahead of her time in the field of entomology, Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) was an expert on insects. At the age of 52 she travelled to South America alone with her daughter to study the metamorphoses of butterflies in the tropical areas of Suriname. These prints pay tribute to her work Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium, published in 1705.
